How To Wear A Plaid Blanket Scarf

Who's finally getting to wear all of the fall layers? That's right, it's finally not 80 degrees so it's time to break out the sweaters, scarves, & hats and start layering! A favorite fall style of mine is the blanket scarf. I love being cozy and trendy at the same time but the blanket scarf can be tough to style because it most cases, it's nothing more than a big piece of fabric.

While a blanket scarf can fall under the 'tricky trend' category, this particular scarf was extra tricky because it's a thick, wool material. When I tried to tie it scarf-style, it nearly swallowed me whole! But just because it's a scarf, it doesn't mean that it has to wrap around your neck. There are a ton of different ways to tie a blanket scarf; in fact, I wrote about How To Wear A Blanket Scarf 4 Ways last year. It was such a popular post- and still is via Pinterest- so I decided to bring the topic back featuring the draped, shawl-style.

STICK WITH NEUTRAL COLORS
Plaid is usually known as a casual or preppy pattern. But despite its casual nature, plaid can be attention-grabbing because of the intricacy of the pattern and the many different colors that are often involved. Taking all of that into consideration, a plaid blanket scarf is simply a show-stopper because of the pattern and style. In these cases, it's usually best to stick with neutral colors or pull one color from the scarf and use it for accents. In this look, I pulled the burgundy from the scarf and chose a hat with a burgundy accent. Aside from that one accent on the band of the hat, the colors of my look are pretty neutral. 

MANAGE PROPORTIONS
With a piece like a blanket scarf or poncho, it's important to manage the proportions so it doesn't swallow you. For this look, I chose an oversized sweater to match the oversized, draped style of the blanket scarf. Then, I added in tight-fitting legging-style pants to to balance my upper half. You could also go the other route by wearing a tight fitting blouse tucked into a flared skirt or a fit-and-flair dress. 

DON'T BE AFRAID TO ACCESSORIZE
Despite the statement of the plaid blanket scarf, don't be afraid to add other accessories. For my look, I wore a cute fall fedora with a simple crossbody bag and some pretty, neutral-colored baubles. Because the scarf is draped, you can even wear a necklace with it! While earrings can be dainty, I recommend a statement necklace to match the oversized proportions of the scarf.

BEHIND THE SCENES
I was so psyched to bring you guys this post today!! The truth is, a lot is going on behind the scenes around here. I'm working on so many things that I know you're all going to love and one of those is... new and improved photos! I just started working with a local photographer- Shelby Powell- and not only did I have an absolute blast, but we got some really awesome shots and fun angles. So, get ready to experience fashion a new way!

We took these photos on the Princeton University campus and it's now my official new favorite place to shoot. I've always loved the campus but for photography, it's an absolute dream. How great is this architecture?

You've been sipping on Oktoberfest beers for weeks, leaves are on the ground, and you're already thinking about your Halloween costume. Who said you have to pack away the brights? Bright colors can really add that extra sparkle to your look because they're eye-catching. Just one bright color can totally transform your look from plain and neutral to dazzling and fun! It can be tricky wearing brighter pieces during the cold weather seasons. Follow these three steps to get it right every time!

1- CHOOSE ONE BRIGHT, STATEMENT PIECE
This piece can be anything you would like! Whether it's a small accessory like a necklace or a main piece like a blouse, that choice is completely up to you and what you feel comfortable in. I enjoy playing with color and taking risks, so I chose a main piece. If you prefer to play it safe or have more of a classic style, go with a small accessory.

2- KEEP EVERYTHING ELSE NEUTRAL
Once you choose that bright piece, style the rest of your look around it but try to stick with neutral, deep hues. For my look, I chose a bright skirt and incorporated it into an all black look. That gives my outfit that fun pop of color but it doesn't look like I'm out and about on a summer day. 

3- ADD WINTER ACCESSORIES
I didn't add any winter accessories to this particular look but it's a great way to communicate what season you're dressing for and it helps integrate that bright color into your look. Try adding a hat, scarf, gloves, boots, or tights to your outfit.

If you own anything red or black, you can make this costume! Here's what you'll need:

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

1- A BLACK TOP
Any black top would do! For my look, I chose my favorite black crop top. This gives my Minnie costume a trendy and modern style. You could also try a simple black tee, tank, or even a bodysuit. 

2- A RED SKIRT
A bright red skirt would make your costume unmistakable! For my look, I chose my fire engine red midi skirt from Express. You could also try a red mini skirt, tutu, or even a pair of red pants. 

3- BLACK PUMPS OR BOOTS
A pair of simple, black pumps are the perfect accessories that you most likely already own. Since it's the fall, you could also try a pair of black boots if you prefer. 

4- MINNIE MOUSE EARS
I happen to already have this Minnie Mouse headband because I got it at Disney World years ago when I last visited. If you don't already have a pair of ears, you still have plenty of easy options. You could buy a pair of ears from the Disney Store or you could work with what you already have and wear your hair in two buns. Simply put a red ribbon or red bow clip in front of each bun to complete your look! Or you could make your own ears. I created a video tutorial for DIY Minnie Mouse ears for your dog. These ears are just hair clips, so you could make them for yourself! This tutorial is actually my most popular YouTube video and blog post. It's super easy!

5- OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
If you really want to go all out, you can add a few extra accessories to complete your look. While it's not necessary, you could use black eye liner to draw on a little black nose and whiskers. If it's chilly outside, you could wear a pair of black tights or leggings.

If you don't already own these items, head to the store or order them online! Even if you spend a little bit of money, you'll still save by making your own costume because you'll be able to wear these items in your daily life.

DEEPEN YOUR HUES
It's amazing how different colors can evoke different emotions. It sounds crazy but by simply packing away your brights and bringing out the deeper hues that you're used to seeing during the fall, it can make a huge difference despite what you're actually wearing. In this look, I'm wearing a crop top and shorts but it seems less summery because they are black. Can you imagine the difference it would make it I were wearing bright pink instead?

MIX LENGTHS
Mixing lengths can also have a big impact on your outfit. What do I mean by this? Here I'm wearing shorts and a jacket. In another example, I might wear a long sleeve top with a pair of ankle trousers or a basic tank with a pair of jeans or tights.

INCORPORATE FALL ACCESSORIES
Accessories can completely change the story of your outfit. Believe it or not, small details can make a big impact! For this particular look, I incorporated boots and a military jacket to give it a fall vibe. What impression would you get if I traded out the boots for flip-flops? Other fall accessories that would work well include: scarves, capes, and hats.
