Spring Work Wear Staples

Lighter fabrics, pretty pastels, classic florals... Spring is finally here! While during the nicer weather, people seem to be more laidback and easygoing- the fashion is no different! The fabrics are lighter and more comfortable. And things just got easier, ladies! While layering can be fun, it is much easier to throw on a flirty floral dress and run out the door. 

So, what are the Spring work wear essentials you should have in your closet right now?

1- Linen Pencil Skirts & Blazers

It's essential to incorporate these light fabric suits into your wardrobe. The linen fabric is breathable and allows for optimal movement and comfort. All our favorite styles and fits are now available in light and bright colors! For the light, you'll need khaki and light grey. And the bright? Coral is an annual must-have!

2- Sleeveless Oxfords & Blouses

The sleeveless oxford is a year-round must-have, but this is the time of year to stock up on them. They are perfect for the Spring because they're versatile. You can wear them with your favorite pencil skirt to work or on the weekend with shorts. Then in the Winter, it makes for an easy layering piece.

For this look, I'm wearing a printed sheer blouse. I have a few of these and they're fabulous! They come in bright colors and fun prints. It still has that button-up collared style, so this is another really great piece for work or play.

3- Tribal Jewelry

Delicate tribal jewelry is featured in every store and online boutique. Fringe, triangles, arrows, and stones are a few examples of what seems to be popping up everywhere!

How To Wear Your Fave Clothes After Losing Weight!

So you've busted your butt all winter to achieve the perfect beach body. You dropped the weight and now it's time to show off the results, but- womp, womp- you have nothing to wear! Over the past few years, my weight has really fluctuated so I have clothing in many different sizes. It's a bittersweet feeling because you're happy with what you've accomplished, but you can no longer wear that perfect pink peplum skirt that was always your favorite. Who else has experienced this?

I like to tuck these "fat" clothes away in the attic 'just in case.' But the truth is, many of these items can still be worn! With a little creativity, and in some cases not so much, you can make something old look new again. 

Here's a few tips on How To Wear Your Favorite Clothes After Losing Weight!

The key to wearing your favorite clothing after losing weight is gaining a new perspective. You have to see your clothes differently and come up with new ways to style it!

1- Belt It

A belt can go a long way! Not only is it a stylish accessory, but it's also functionable. Use it to hold your loose clothing in place or add it to an oversized piece for a totally transformed look. 

In this photo, I gave this pencil skirt a high-waisted look by adjusting it and holding it in place with my favorite flower sash belt from White House Black Market. This belt was a fantastic investment because it literally goes with everything from an elegant evening dress to a playful summer dress. Plus, it doesn't get more neutral than black!

2- Layer It

Layering can work wonders on baggy clothing! Turning a casual dress into a jumper by layering an oxford top underneath it is the most common way of incorporating this method. Check out how I styled a similar look in my previous post: How To Layer a Little Black Dress.

3- Pin It

If all else fails, try out the old pinning method! Be careful with this route because not all clothing will sit well with a pin. It worked for me today, so it's definitely a possibility to consider!

The Essentials For Creating a Look Inspired by Spencer Hastings of Pretty Little Liars

We're just 24-hours away from the season 5 finale of my favorite show- Pretty Little Liars! If you haven't heard me say it before, I'll say it again. This show is amazing! We can expect this particular episode to be fantastic because it's the finale and like many shows, PLL always goes out with a bang. Knowing that the show has signed onto another 2 seasons and the fact of how they've ended past seasons, we can anticipate that they aren't going to tie this one up with a neat little bow. 

So in honor of this occasion, here's a fashionable tribute to my favorite character- Spencer Hastings. This girl is all about plaid, oxford tops, and blazers. Her style is best described as preppy, polished, and chic. I love it! The best part about it for me is that Spencer's style is beyond her age. Although she's supposed to be in high school, many of her looks would be great for the office! She is constantly inspiring my everyday look. It really helps with ways to creatively mix and match what you already own. 

Must-haves to recreate Spencer's style:
- Oxford tops
- Blazers
- Anything plaid
- Pleated mini skirts
- Oxford shoes
- Knee-high socks

There are a ton of websites that make recreating looks from your favorite shows much easier! My personal favorite is Worn On TV. Almost immediately after an episode airs, they start linking to what the characters actually wore on the show. It's pretty fun to see what they actually wear and what brands! Most shows feature clothing that is way out of my reach, however, Pretty Little Liars often features clothing that's affordable or semi-affordable. Typically by the time the show airs, most of these items are either sold out or on sale. It's really all about luck! 

Last week, I managed to get this Ralph Lauren plaid vest worn by Spencer during Ali's trial. It was on sale for $40 (marked down from $125) and they had my size! That was such a win!

Building A Wardrobe of Classics: Spend Wisely, Save Later

I've heard the phrase 'less is more' time and time again throughout my life, as I'm sure all of you have. It's one of those things that you hear all of the time but really don't think about. However, it rings true for many things in life! For a conversation, less words spoken can be more wise. For a gallery wall, a collage of black and white photos can be just as beautiful (if not more beautiful) than a vivacious splash of color. This rule of thumb is no different in the fashion world!

That being said, I have been focusing on being wiser when it comes to my shopping. I tend to be an impulsive 'love it, want it, need it' type of consumer and I really want to move away from that. By indulging in trends-of-the-moment, it leaves me with less ways to mix and match what I already have and I end up spending more in the end. By upgrading my wardrobe and leaning more towards classic investment pieces, I will save in the long run!

Here's a few tips that I've learned along the way so far!

1- Study where to shop.

Browse many stores, boutiques, and websites to compare quality and style. Read the reviews and really discover what people are saying about the quality and fit. Most stores have a line of classics that they reproduce in different colors and patterns for every season. For instance, Banana Republic has a Sloan fit pencil skirt that is always in stock. It's usually available in classic colors and then they add in a few seasonal colors, as well.

The internet is such a powerful tool because people post their opinions everywhere! If it's an uncomfortable or unflattering fit, their reviews will save you the trouble. Once you learn who sells what, you'll be able to narrow down what styles flatter your body type, what fits your preferences, and what materials are lasting. My favorite shops include Banana Republic, White House Black Market, J.Crew, Express, and recently, Ann Taylor.

2- Learn your favorite stores sale cycles.

The stores I listed are expensive but it's possible to get a good deal if you look. Most people view the marketing emails as spam, but I recommend subscribing to your top 5 favorite stores. That way you get notifications of when they're running these promotions! So from my experiences, I know that Banana Republic often runs a 40% off promo. I'll shop at my convenience, put things in my online cart, and then wait until I get the email about the sale. They run the discount often enough where you likely won't miss out on the products you have your eye on!

White House Black Market has THE best quality shoes with a pretty decent comfort level! They typically run within the $100-$150 price range, which is way more than I can spend. I wait until I get their 'new reductions' email notification and then check out what's on sale. Their boutiques don't carry many sale items, so you definitely have to order online. Since it comes from the warehouse, they usually have a nice size selection. You can get an amazing pair of shoes anywhere from $30 to $70!

3- There is a chic elegance to minimalism.

Apply your thrifty sales knowledge to your favorite store's classic pieces. The black midi skirt I'm wearing is from Banana Republic. It's made of a fabulous 'scuba' fabric that makes it less prone to wrinkles and gives it a shine that appears very luxe! I got it for 40% off and I expect it to last me years! The light pink tee is from Express. It probably won't be as long lasting, but it's a simple piece that I got on sale for $10-$20. It can be dressed up by being paired with a skirt or dressed down with a pair of jeans for the weekend.

4- Go trend-crazy with accessories.

To enjoy the trends-of-the-moment, have a revolving door of accessories! This LC Lauren Conrad statement necklace adds a trendy flair to my look and it was inexpensive. There's also accessory services, like RocksBox. I pay $20/month and rent 3 pieces of jewelry at a time. I keep it as long as I want and then send it back when I'm ready for something new.

How To Transition Your Wardrobe To Spring (& Maximize It!)

 

They say March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb. Well, we sure experienced the lion with all of the crazy, unpleasant weather we had! Now I'm ready for the lamb! Who's with me?

I've been keeping busy with some Spring cleaning projects; re-decorating my bedroom and swim suit shopping. But one of the most time consuming projects of all is transitioning your wardrobe to the next season! If you live in a state that experiences all four seasons like I do, then you'll know what I'm talking about. While it can be fun and exciting to rediscover all of your old clothing from seasons past, it really is a bit of a daunting task. But it doesn't have to be!

Instead of getting all new clothing, try to focus on transitioning what you already have. Here's a few tips on how to simplify your life and maximize your wardrobe through transitioning.

When you think outside of the box, amazing things can happen! You'll be surprised at how many pieces can be transitioned when you really take a close look at your closet. Hopefully these tips will get all of us in the spirit (myself included)!

How to Transition Your Wardrobe to Spring (& Maximize It!)

1- Lighter Color Palette

One of the most important elements in fashion is the color palette. By simply changing the color of a piece, it can make it perfect for one season or even season-less. My favorite season-less colors are red, navy, blush, greys, and nudes.

2- Add Seasonal Details

Instead of spending your well-earned money on seasonal clothing, spend it on seasonal accessories. This is a great way to take a season-less outfit and make it scream Spring!

3- Stick with Layering Pieces

Hold back on the sweaters and instead invest more in sleeveless oxfords, light cardigans, and short sleeve blouses. These are fantastic layering pieces for the colder weather and perfect for transitioning to warmer weather. Remove a layer here, add a layer there; layering is ideal for customizing a look for every season.

The Banana Republic Anna Cardigan in navy is a fabulous transition piece because of the color and lightweight material. For the Fall and Winter, I love pairing it with plaid or argyle for a collegiate look. Then in the Spring and Summer, it's a lovely addition to a nautical-inspired look or a great neutral to complement brights, like coral or turquoise.

The LC Lauren Conrad Floral Statement Necklace is a great example of seasonal accessories! By adding this to my look, it adds an instant dash of Spring fever.

The blush ruffled blouse from The Limited is the epitome of a transitional piece. It's a sleeveless blouse- also known as a shell- so you can wear it all Winter with a blazer or sweater. Then come Spring, pair it with a lighter jacket or wear it by itself.

The Two M's: Military Jackets & Midi Skirts

Military jackets are one of my all time favorite trends! I don't care if it's in or out of style or season because I am rocking one of these babies anyway. The truth is, I just have this special place in my heart for jackets and blazers. The military style is especially fabulous, in my opinion, because of the amazing details. The buttons are always big and glamorous, while there's often some sort of intricate embroidery to compliment it.

I recently realized that I don't have one in my closet. So, I searched high and wide- and this is what I came up with!

 

 

This INC International Concepts military jacket from Macy's is a fantastic addition to my wardrobe! Although I'm still keeping an eye out for one with a bit more detailing, I love this jacket because it's a classic. The silhouette is typical military style, while the coloring is the standard taupe. It also comes in black, white, and a bright coral (new!).

While summer is just around the corner, the material is very lightweight. I expected more of a denim jacket weight, but it's actually more like a cargo jacket. This makes it perfect for all seasons, particularly summer and spring!

What's Your Weekend Style Personality?

I love dressing up for work- and when I say love, that's an understatement! I really have a love for office wear and that truly goes back to a time before I worked in an office. But sometimes it's nice to kick back and wear jeggings on the weekend! Especially when there's snow on the ground. Ick.

I try to keep my weekend style classic and clean, but I'm a real sucker for bright colors and prints. My closet as a whole is loud! I often have to pull myself back, so my style tends to end up somewhere in the middle of the spectrum of minimalist to lavish. This time around I put my neutrals to the test and went for a more minimalist look!
